The Flying Nurse by Prudence Wheelright

I picked up this autobiography because I thought it looked interesting and it didn’t disappoint.

Prudence Wheelwright is a nurse and midwife who has worked in some of the most isolated areas of Australia and in dangerous locations around the world. The book tells the story of her early life and her extraordinary nursing career.

Prudence grew up on a property in rural NSW and has worked as a nurse in various countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Tajikistan. The part I found most interesting was her work as a Remote Area Nurse and her ambition to work with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The book was a page turning read and I liked the style of writing. It gave good insight into what Prudence was thinking at various times and why she made the decisions she did. I thought it was pretty amazing that Prudence, who is so passionate about nursing, originally pursued that career because it was the university course her mother signed her up to while she was doing a gap year overseas!

I would recommend this book because it gives a different insight into nursing and health care systems around the world and will also give you a greater appreciation for the amazing work nurses do.
