Book club for kids!

Gather your friends together, use the lists provided to choose a book, read, get together again and discuss… just like the grown ups!

Choose your books

Book suggestions are available for:  5-7 years, 7-9 years, 9-11 years, 11-13 years.

Each member of your group is responsible for finding their own book:

Here are some suggestions on using the book lists:

  • Everybody reads the same title and move down the list each month
  • Each member reads a different title each month. Draw the titles out of a hat.

When your book club meets

At your first meeting talk about how to run your Book Club

  • Where you will meet, what time you will meet and how long a meeting will go for (we recommend 30-60 minutes)
  • Which book you will read

If you are unsure what to talk about, print the JBC Roles and hand out to the group. These provide each person helpful tips to get the discussion started.

Information For Adults

The benefits of encouraging Junior Book Club

  • Book clubs promote a love of literature in a positive, nurturing environment.
  • Book clubs encourage critical thinking and deeper engagement with stories.
  • Book clubs provide accountability for students in reading and reading comprehension.

Sometimes a group will need an adult’s assistance:

  • Help the kids get to and from meetings safely
  • Try virtual meetings using Skype, Facetime or Zoom
  • Make sure that the kids in the club are at a similar reading level
  • We encourage kids to be a leader of their own junior book club but sometimes a group may need an adult to be the leader – maybe this could be you!
  • Help kids join the local library or join online and use online resources
  • Help them to reserve books
  • Be aware of the many ways kids can ‘read’ a book. Show them how to download an eBook or eAudiobook and watch Story Box Library
  • Tempt the kids to look for more books by the author they enjoyed or on the theme they related to
  • Consider adding a game like Roll and Retell combining discussion with action.

And most importantly!

  • Never turn Junior Book Club into a chore! There are lots of activities to enjoy in life, make sure reading is one of them!
