Runt by Craig Silvey

I adored this book, five stars!

After a discussion about this book with a library member, I decided to give it a go. It’s an uplifting tale about kindness, resilience, family, hardship, friendship, greed, hope, drought, teamwork and more. I fell in love with characters, relished the puns and laughed out loud more than once.

Annie Shearer lives in a small country town with her best friend, an adopted stray dog called Runt. The two share an exceptional bond. By chance Annie discovers Runt’s extraordinary talents. Meanwhile, a greedy landowner threatens to take the family farm. Can the duo beat the odds to save their home?

I highly recommend listening to the audiobook (maybe even with your kids) narrated by Genevieve Hegrey – her performance made me feel like I was right there amongst the action.

Each themed chapter is short and the original illustrations throughout by Sara Acton are stunning. Aimed for 8 to 12 year olds, it’s a delightful MUST-READ for all ages.

As it turns out, RUNT is coming to our movie screens very soon. Why not read (or listen to) it before watching?! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
