This was a fun and joyful read. We meet Alan and Heather Winterbottom as they retire from their medical practice after working together for 40 years. Heather has dreams for her retirement – travel to Greece and other exciting adventures with her husband – away from the dreary day to day life. Reality hits and Heather feels invisible while Alan is forging ahead with the garden and forming new friendships. Heather does have a friend (an ex patient), but unfortunately Esme dies.
In a bold move Heather decides to take off to Greece with Esme’s ashes without her family for gap year in the hopes that they will miss her. What ensues is a grand adventure filled with Homer’s Odyssey, travel mishaps and a possible romance.
Joanna writes about ageing characters that are relatable with a lovely dash of humour. Her author bio states that she is a GP and advocate for positive ageing, and this shines through in her writing. She covers issues on ageing, family and community with a heartwarming focus.
Read this book, it will leave a smile on your face!
