The Work Wives features two women who are best friends at work. Deb is a single mum. Her teenage daughter Ramona means the world to her but is starting to push back against Deb’s overprotective parenting style. Deb has good reason to be overprotective – she’s never told Ramona the truth about her father. Ramona thinks she was conceived by donor sperm. So when she takes a DNA test to find her father, she has no idea she is opening a can of worms.
Deb’s work bestie is a vibrant, quirky 27-year-old called Quinn, who gets about on rollerskates and is addicted to dating apps. When Quinn bumps into a drool-worthy man on the street, she’s convinced he’s the one and becomes obsessed with finding ‘handbag dude’ again.
Then handbag man, Oscar Darke, turns up at Quinn and Deb’s work as the new Sales Manager. Quinn thinks that Oscar Darke is her destiny. But Deb knows way too much about Oscar’s dark past.
This is a really fun read, and I loved that it covered so many life stages. One of my favourite characters was the teenage Ramona, who is doing her best to survive high school. There are a few coincidences in the plot, but I still really enjoyed the book because Rachael is such a good writer. She creates endearing characters, and her books leave you feeling hopeful about the world.
I’m currently half-way through The Other Bridget and am thoroughly enjoying it.
