Bubsie and the Boys by David Riley

Bubsie and the boys is a book full of adventure.

In 1929, Nevill Westwood and Greg Davies, two Seventh-Day Adventist missionaries, set off from Perth to Darwin in a small 2-seater Citroen car they call Bubsie. The Citroen had a motor that is equivalent to a modern-day ride on lawnmower. By the time they reach Darwin, Nevill has decided to return to Perth via the east coast of Australia. He suddenly finds himself a participant in the race to be the first to lap Australia by car. Two other cars were also beginning the drive to lap Australia.

The story is told in a very factual way, with lots of historical titbits, giving the reader a wonderful insight into this adventure. The story is accompanied by a small selection of photographs – luckily, they packed their formal suits!

Doing the Big Lap is a dream of mine, but I cannot imagine doing it without a GPS, designated roads, regular fuel outlets and an air-conditioned four-wheel drive. Nevill and Greg had to rely on themselves, their own mechanical skills, and a bit of luck. The hospitality of the station owners along the way was critical to their success – they welcomed travellers warmly, offering meals and a place to sleep.

This was a fascinating read and a small glimpse into Australia’s history. It captures just how big our country really is and our pioneering spirit and sense of adventure.
