An Ill Wind by Margaret Hickey

As opening scenes go, An Ill Wind by Margaret Hickey is hard to beat. Wind turbines stretch across the hills like something out of War of the Worlds, all spinning – except one. Turbine 82 stands eerily still. Hanging from one of its massive white blades is a body. Yep, I was hooked. Was it suicide? Murder? Whatever it was, it definitely wasn’t an accident.

Set in a small Aussie town, full of old secrets, messy relationships and people who can’t escape their past, the characters feel real and the tension builds in a natural way. It’s not flashy, but it’s smart, gritty and quietly gripping. A great pick if you like crime stories with atmosphere.

I can’t wait for our night with Margaret Hickey next month, will you be joining us?
