SVC Libraries Writing Competition

Tumut, Batlow and Tumbarumba Libraries

Unleash your creativity and spark your imagination with our writing competition!

The SVC Libraries Writing Competition returns this year after last year’s success!

This year features a new high school category, an increased word limit, and a special guest judge, Catherine Rains, author of The Sheepdog Who Was Afraid of Sheep.

Catherine will be judging entries using the following criteria.

  • Using creativity and imagination in your writing. Does your writing have exciting characters and colourful worlds?
  • A new and unique story. Try to write something we’ve never read before!
  • Inclusion of the ‘key phrase’.

Stories will be judged in three age categories: 6-8 years (Infants), 9-13 years, (Primary) 14-17 years (High school).

Entry is open to anyone who lives in the Snowy Valley Council area. Stories must not exceed the maximum limit of 1000 words, must include the key phrase and a completed entry form.

The key phrase for 2026 is ‘Where is the dog?’

Winners will be announced during Library and Information Week with prizes awarded to the winning entry and runner up in each category.

Entry forms are available online here or from Batlow, Tumbarumba and Tumut Libraries, at outreach services in Adelong and Talbingo or from the mobile library at Jingellic, Khancoban and Tooma.

Cost: FREE

Entries open on Monday 20 April and close on Friday 12 June, 2026.
